'Khala kehti thi' (Aunt used to say) is a series of ornate  lettering expressions which are everyday Indian Urdu street smart proverbs like, "Khayali Pulao" (to build castles in the air) , "Deewaron ke bhi kaan hote Hain" (even walls have ears), etc. In the Indian subcontinent we usually tend to hear these proverbs and phrases from the elders in our family particularly our aunties (khala).

Originally carved using linoleum sheets, these prints have been reproduced as Screen prints and later digital artworks were reprinted in a large format for India Culture Labs’ exhibit ‘Urdu Culture Now’.

“The artists interventions in Urdu typography and lettering highlight the aesthetics of the Urdu script and work towards reinventing it in innovative ways”
